These guidelines were prepared by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) and represent the consensus of veterinary experts in pet obesity management. They are intended to serve as a guideline only. The recommendations should not be interpreted as dictating an exclusive protocol, course of treatment, or procedure. Variations in practice may be appropriate based on the needs of individual patients, the professional judgment of the veterinary team, and the resources and limitations of each practice setting.
This tool is intended for use by veterinary professionals. For pets with a body condition score (BCS) of 7/9 or higher, APOP strongly recommends initiating weight loss under the direct supervision of a veterinary healthcare team using a Step Weight Loss Plan. Regular monitoring and consideration of other health factors are essential to ensure safe and effective weight management. APOP may update these formulations and recommendations as new research and data become available.
About daily energy needs - DER/MER Calculator
The DER/MER Calculator helps veterinary teams and pet owners estimate daily energy needs for dogs and cats using body weight, life stage, activity level, reproductive status, and weight-management goals. WPOA’s tool supports calorie planning by estimating resting energy requirement and maintenance or daily energy requirement, then translating those estimates into practical feeding guidance. It is designed to support clinical conversations about nutrition, body condition, obesity prevention, and monitored weight management, not to replace individualized veterinary judgment.
